Music performances from the Great Hall

Pool of Bethesda

Edward Picton-Turbervill and Robert Hawkins, 2025

The Pool of Bethesda is a new cantata by artist in residence Edward Picton-Turbervill, with a libretto by Robert Hawkins. It was premiered in the Great Hall in November 2025. The performance features the hospital community choir, which was assembled for this new piece.

Taking their inspiration from the painting of the same name on the Hogarth Stair in Barts North Wing, Edward and Robert drew out the themes of water, healing, and community from the story in John’s Gospel, bringing fresh relevance to the story for those using the hospital in the 21st century.
